About This Piece: Eleanor Custis, known as Nelly, was the granddaughter of Martha Washington and the step-granddaughter / adopted daughter of George Washington.
Nelly would have been 21 years old when she did this. A year later, Feb. 22, 1799, she would marry George Washington's nephew, Lawrence Lewis. George Washington died the following winter (December 14, 1799).
